COME RIDE THE CAJA on May 26-27, 2018
50-mile Endurance
25-mile Limited Distance Rider and Runner Competition (Saturday)
12-mile Fun/Introductory Ride
The Caja del Rio is a 67,000 acre portion of the Santa Fe National Forest. Contiguous BLM lands add about another 15,000 acres. At the Caja, you will be riding through pinon/juniper forests and will have beautiful views of the mountains and valleys surrounding Santa Fe. We plan to make this a great ride for LD's, 50's and the fun riders. The base camp will be at the HIPICO Santa Fe equestrian center to access trails in the southern Caja.
This ride is being held to support the New Mexico Center for Therapeutic Riding, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based at HIPICO.
Check in Friday, May 25th between 2–5pm. Dogs must be on a leash at all times. Equines must be 60 months (5 years) old to enter the 50-mile ride and 48 months (4 years) old to enter the limited distance, 25-mile ride. Helmets are required for juniors and highly recommended for others. Dinner will be provided for riders; extra dinners are available for purchase for non-riders for $10.00 each. You must have proof of a negative Coggins within 12 months and a health certificate current within 30 days if you are out of state. Coggins and health papers will be checked at the ride. Please, absolutely no horses or dogs on the polo field grass at any time.
This year all vet checks will be at our HIPICO base camp. We are planning our ride meeting on Friday about 5:30 pm. Dinner will be provided for riders and volunteers on Saturday and Sunday and available for non-riders for $10. Friday evening, dinner will be after the ride meeting. Saturday and Sunday, dinner will be after all riders have returned to base camp, around 6:30p.m., with the awards meeting to follow thereafter. We plan to start the 50s at 7:00am, the 25s at 8:00am, fun riders at 9:00am each morning, but final start times will depend on the weather and other logistical considerations. Start times will be announced no later than the ride meeting on Friday.
